Meet the 2014 Honda Jazz

Honda has stated in a press release that the new Jazz Hybrid is the most frugal hybrid car in Japan, returning a mileage of 36.4 km/l from its Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive (i-DCD). This is an improvement of 35% over the previous Jazz Hybrid. The hybrid Jazz uses the same aforementioned 1.5-litre engine mated to a 7-speed DCT offering three hybrid modes. It can run on EV mode alone till 40 km/hr but unfortunately, Honda will not launch the hybrid Jazz in India.
The third generation Honda Jazz will go on sale in Japan in September and is also known as the Honda Fit in many markets. The 2014 Honda Jazz is evidently longer and the increase in wheelbase further boosts interior room of the already spacious hatchback.
The exterior design of the new Jazz is influenced from bigger Hondas, namely the FCX Clarity, CR-V and to a certain extent even the NSX. The dashboard of the new Honda Jazz is certainly driver centric although we aren’t quite sure about the centre console.

Powering the Honda Jazz in India will be the same 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, which did duty on its predecessor. The new powertrain will of course be the frugal oil burner, which is already employed in the Amaze diesel. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC unit belts out a class leading 100 BHP of power with a respectable 200 Nm of torque. Both these engines help Honda keep the Jazz defined as a small car in India, resulting in excise duty benefits. The company has given the Honda Jazz better dynamics, improved interior room (the old Jazz was massively spacious already) and modern exteriors.

Mercedes Benz CLA

Expected: End 2013

Rs. 25 lakh
(Estimated Ex-Showroom Price)

Introduction of  Mercedes-Benz CLA

Mercedes-Benz, a subsidiary of Germany-based auto manufacturer Daimler, offers a number of luxury cars, buses, coaches and trucks in the Indian auto market. Interestingly, the ultra luxury brand Maybach is also a part of the Mercedes-Benz cars division, which recently stopped its production due to low sales volumes. Currently the brand with a three pointed star has 16 segments that are categorised in A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, CL-Class, CLA-Class, CLS-Class, E-Class, G-Class, GL-Class, CLK-Class, M-Class, R-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, SLK-Class and SLS AMG.
Mercedes-Benz, along with BMW and Audi, form the big 3 German luxury auto makers that compete with each other in order to become number one position holder in the luxury car segment. Ironically, these three stalwarts are also known for selling one of the best premium cars in the world.
Presently, it is not an unknown fact that the stronghold of Mercedes-Benz does not exist any more in the luxury car segment of the Indian auto market. Along with, the auto maker has fared badly in the global market in the recent times, which is evident from its global sales figures. It must be noted that BMW and Audi have captured the imagination of car buyers in India, and gained a strong position in the market. However, Mercedes-Benz has devised some plans in order to achieve the number one spot back in India, which is evident from its new range of cars.
The company only has itself to blame for this decline in dominance, if the quality of its rivals' vehicles is not taken into consideration. Nowadays, cars from Mercedes-Benz are regarded as vehicles for the 'old man' due to its conservative styling and limitations in terms of variety. However, the German company has sort to resolve this issue by doing some modifications in its plans and executing a strong comeback by the year 2016. This resurrection is already under way with Mercedes-Benz introducing some new cars while the others are ready to be launched. Some of these vehicles include A-Class, B-Class Diesel, GLA and the CLA.
The German auto maker is particularly targeting the luxury compact car segment, which will be based on the new Modular Front Architecture (MFA) platform. This concept is said to be the mantra of Mercedes-Benz to take on its rivals BMW and Audi in the Indian car market. Unlike before, when the company did not had any entry level sedan or crossover like Audi Q3 and BMW X1, it launched the first front-wheel drive car, B-Class, in the market.
Jorg Prigl, the Vice President for product group compact cars at Mercedes-Benz, was quoted as saying, “We expect new growth to come from the compact segment since it will open up new markets like China and the US and fetch volumes in markets like India and Brazil which will be completely new for that segment. India and Brazil have potential provided we make products specific to these markets and manufacture locally."
The latest upcoming vehicle from the armour of Mercedes-Benz is CLA, which was formally launched at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. Apart from it, the vehicle was also unveiled at Avant/Garde Diaries event in Los Angeles that soon followed with Auto China 2012 and Huashan 1914 Creative Park events. The vehicle was code named C117 and is available in different variants, namely CLA 180, CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY, CLA 200, CLA 250 and CLA 220 CDI. As claimed by the company, CLA is the most aerodynamic production vehicle ever built, beating the likes of Tesla Model S. Apart from it, a sport variant named CLA 45 AMG is slated to be launched in the coming months. This variant will share its drivetrain with A45 AMG and will have 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. It is believed that the model will clock from initial to 100 kmph in just a short span of 4.6 seconds. As according to company, the CLA 45 will debut at the 2013 New York Auto Show.
The production for Mercedes-Benz CLA is currently carried at Kecskemet plant in Hungary, which also is home for making B-Class hatchback. Describing about the plant's capabilities Frank Klein (Plant Manager) said "The plant's entire team can't wait to get the CLA to our customers as perfectly as the B-Class cars we build in Kecskemét. We aim to follow up seamlessly on what we achieved in our first, very successful production year of 2012." Last year, the Kecskemet plant had reached its first goal to produce more than 40.000 vehicles, thus making an important contribution to the B-Class' best ever annual sales (worldwide sales of 145,649 units, more than 11 percent over the previous sales record in 2006).
Talking about the Mercedes-Benz CLA launch in India, which is expected by September 2013, this car has already generated a lot of buzz in the Indian car market. CLA happens to be an entry level sedan, which is based on the recently launched A-Class. According to industry experts, the CLA will be positioned below the current generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The German auto maker is expecting to cash-in on the festive season in India, a time when car sales soar in the country due to the auspiciousness of the tenure. It is going to be assembled at the facility in Chakan, which is located in Pune (Maharashtra). Mercedes-Benz is trying to capitalise on the first-mover advantage through the launch of CLA as none of its rivals will be introducing a vehicle in the same segment at the time. The company is expecting a rise in the demand for low priced models of the coveted brand, which makes the Mercedes-Benz CLA an important part of its strategy.
Although many would expect CLA to be a small sized sedan, it will be longer and wider than the C-Class. Industry experts feel that the smart and classy looks of CLA will surely work in its favour. It is believed that the design of Mercedes-Benz CLA will be similar to the A-Class. Largely the design of CLA follows foot steps of CLS with its numerous detailed features that gives a sporty shape to the car. The bonnet of the upcoming CLA will come embedded with power drones along with a diamond like radiator grille at its front bumper. On the sides, three striking lines will be seen, giving a mean and leak look to the CLA. Apart from an athletic rear end, the main highlight of its design is the gradual descending roofline that gives a coupe like character to the car.
The designing of upcoming Mercedes-Benz model has been given a much more aerodynamic shape, owing to its low A-pillar, exterior mirrors and extensive under body panelling. The use of such characters result in a good amount of airflow characteristics, which make the drive fuel efficient. With a low Cd figure of 0.23 for its standard model, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA has achieved a new feet of being the most aerodynamic vehicle ever made.
Engine & Specification of Mercedes-Benz CLA
The Mercedes-Benz CLA will be available in four engine options, namely 3 petrol and a diesel version. Petrol variants of the CLA will be known as CLA 180, CLA 200 and CLA 250, which will generate outputs of 122 bhp, 156 bhp and 211 bhp, respectively. On the other hand, the diesel variant, called the CLA 220 CDI, is expected to churn out a maximum power of 170 bhp. All these engines will be mated to a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, which will transfer the power to all its wheels. Apart from these versions, the performance variant of CLA is also slated to release soon, which will be named the CLA 45 AMG.
Exterior, Interior and Safety features of Mercedes-Benz CLA
The CLA class boasts of quite brilliant looks with edgy exteriors. The large front radiator grille sports the traditional Mercedes-Benz logo while the daytime running LED's lights in the headlamp cluster is the best part in the front fascia, as far as design is concerned. As compared to CLS, it has sharper creases and a more sportier design, which gives a more extrovert look. The detailing given to panel of the body, includes outer rarer view mirrors and a muffler tip, which give an aerodynamic shape to the car. Mercedes-Benz designers have quite lived up to the expectations of giving a balanced and sleek look to the upcoming CLA, which is quite visible from its designing language. The rear styling of CLA has taken cues from CLS with its structured edge. Featuring an arrow style arrangement, the tail lights are integrated in the wide muscular rear of the model. Apart from it, the sloping roof contour design and the distinct curvature of the rear windows gives more of a coupe stylised character to the car. An option of a sliding panoramic roof is available, which shall be a distinct possibility in India as of now. The car's dynamic design shapes a new and much needed youthful face to Mercedes-Benz.
The cabin of CLA is impressive and has some similarities with A-Class. The contemporary yet traditional feel given in the interiors spells out a true Mercedes-Benz car. For the comfort of passengers, sporty seats along with a more leg room space is provided in CLA as compared to its sister A-Class. The large 5.8-inch flat screen displays essential information regarding the various function of the car. The aircraft inspired air-conditioning vents that are done with electroplated bezels adds a dash of styling to the interiors of the car. A three spoke steering wheel with shift paddles and steering mounted controls provides convenience for the driver. However, it shall be be interesting to see the features that the Indian version of CLA shall be equipped with.
The car is provided with best-in-class features to ensure safety and comfort passengers. Features like Bluetooth connectivity for music streaming and hands-free calling are provided in all models. To ensure a good sound quality, a 12 speaker Harmon/Kardon sound system is available. Apart from it, safety functions like Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist are offered in CLA. Besides to it, individual options like DISTRONIC PLUS and PARKTRONIC with active parking assist are equipped in the car. However, it must be noted that these features are available in the foreign car market while no information regarding the Indian market is available as of now.
As of now, Mercedes-Benz CLA can pose major problems for its own C-Class, which is nearly of the same size while offered in near about same price range. Though next year, the next generation C-Class is slated to hit the worldwide market, which will be bigger and equipped with more features that its current model. So till that time, Mercedes-Benz may have to chalk out plans for overcoming the problems that may arise after the launch of CLA.
Recent products like A-Class and B-Class along with the CLA proves a more aggressive and innovative design strategy, which is now followed by Mercedes-Benz. With more sportier and dynamic shape of its cars, the company has now ushered into a new era giving up its traditional designing policies, which it used extensively on its cars over the years. The latest technological advancements spells out the approach of Mercedes-Benz to reclaim the top spot of luxury car maker from its arch-rivals BMW.
As of now, there no point denying the fact that Mercedes-Benz CLA will attract a large number of buyers owing to its dynamic design that will catch attention of the masses. The car offers a visual appeal and most importantly the expected pricing of it between A-Class and C-Class gives a more tooth in order to garner a good market response.

                 Shanghai Auto Show 2013

Icona Vulcano: The Icona Vulcano was a local surprise, its brilliant supercar style and know-how created by the Shanghai-based, Italian design and engineering business Icona. Drawing on expertise that includes a former Ferrari  F1 engineer and an ex-Jaguar Land Rover designer, it is beautifully proportioned and has two engine options: a rear-wheel drive 950hp V12 hybrid capable of 0-62mph in 3.0 seconds as well as 12 miles in full electric mode, or a quicker four-wheel drive 870hp V6 with two electric motors for a 2.9-second 0-62mph and 217mph top speed. Icona says the Vulcano is a one-off, but if you have the million-plus pounds required, the firm promises not to build more than five to keep things exclusive

Porsche Panamera e-Hybrid: Alongside a convincing facelift that smoothes out some of the previous model's unsightly proportions, the new Panamera also gets an ingenious e-hybrid model, which showcases highly credible eco technology that will soon be available to buy. The plug-in hybrid's 91mpg and 71g/km CO2 figures easily trump the old S Hybrid's 41.5mpg and 159g/km and the diesel's 44.8mpg and 166g/km. Despite this, the e-hybrid can still muster 416hp, 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds and 22 miles in electric-only mode.

Mercedes Concept GLA: The Concept GLA previews Mercedes' answer to the Range Rover Evoque and Audi Q3, available in Spring 2014. The concept's bold but elegant form is due to become a production reality that will be almost untouched on the outside, as its British exterior designer, Mark Fetherston explains: 'The production car is almost one-to-one to this concept, you won't notice the difference.' Refreshing news then, but don't expect its more futuristic cabin with exposed aluminium structures and thick saddle leather to be tick-box options in a year's time

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk II first drive

The Trailhawk II was the third of the four concepts I drove in the Moab desert in Utah, USA, during the week-long 2013 Easter Safari in March. The luridly, wildly orange Trailhawk II is based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the new EcoDiesel V6 under its hood.

The Grand Cherokee sits rather nicely on its chunky off-road wheels and boasts the usual wealth of off-road and custom bits including the SRT bonnet and LED lighting. It also included 35-inch Mickey Thompson tyres, enlarged wheel openings, new front and rear skid plates, dual rear tow hooks as well as modified rock rails from Mopar.
But what really caught my attention the most was the 3-litre V6 diesel that powers it. I got to drive it for a short while and a few things became clear. The engine makes 240PS and uses a new 8-speed automatic that promises gains in both economy and performance.

The Trailhawk II also included 35-inch Mickey Thompson tyres, enlarged wheel openings, new front and rear skid plates, dual rear tow hooks as well as modified rock rails from Mopar
This being a Jeep, there is also a 44.1:1 crawl ratio when you opt for the two-speed transfer case. Our car had this, and a button panel called Selec-Terrain at the end of the centre console which uses a rotary knob to ‘Selec’ between snow, sand, mud, rock and automatic modes. You can also raise or lower the suspension if the Quadra-lift air suspension system is optioned in and, of course, press a button and you’re in 4-low. The Quadra-Trac (the 4×4 system’s brand name) also comes in three flavours. The basic gets a single-speed, fully automatic transfer case while the second stage adds traction control and low range. The top end adds an electronic limited slip diff.
The diesel engine is very refined and silent
The diesel engine is very refined and silent
What was the engine like in feel? First, this is a reasonably quiet, refined diesel. Even with windows down, the engine note remained quiet and controlled. Torque output appears to be more than adequate and I suspect this will make a good highway cruiser of an engine in nature and feel. The Trailhawk II matches the SRT hood to SRT front and rear fascias modded for extra ground clearance, a blacked out front grille, a matte black roof and custom one-off roof rails.

Exclusive: We reveal Nissan's upcoming 10 car line-up for India
It’s well-known that Nissan plans to introduce 10 new products in the Indian market by March 2017, and with it, garner a 10 per cent marketshare. But what about these offerings – are these new nameplates, facelifts or generation upgrades? And, what role will Datsun play in all of this, if at all? We have all the answers.

Nissan Terrano sketch
Nissan Terrano sketch
The 10 per cent marketshare in sales volume will come 50 per cent from Datsun and 50 per cent from Nissan products. The Datsun line-up will only comprise three products while there will be seven new offerings from Nissan. And by new, we mean new nameplates and generation upgrades. Facelifts like those of the Evalia and the Sunny which are expected before the end of this year, will not count against this number. Neither will engine or gearbox changes on existing nameplates.
The first product from Datsun has already been unveiled. The Go is a Micra-sized hatchback with tremendous space on the inside. It will cost about Rs 3.6 lakh when it goes on sale early next year and will threaten the likes of the Hyundai i10. The next product from Datsun will be an MPV along similar lines as the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It too, will be based on the same modified B-platform as the Go and will make its debut in Indonesia in the later part of 2014.
Carlos Ghosn with the new Datsun GO

Expect seating for seven, and similar equipment and quality levels as the Go. It will be powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol engine as the Datsun hatch, and will additionally come with the 1.5-litre diesel currently found under the hood of the Micra. The Datsun MPV, we believe, will undercut the Ertiga and Enjoy pricing and should cost a little under Rs 5 lakh when it makes its Indian debut towards the end of next year. The final car from Datsun will be a sedan. Again, it will share its underpinnings with the Go and we don’t expect too many changes to the interior either.
As for Nissan-branded products, there will be two all-new nameplates. The first will be the Duster-based, five-seater SUV, the Terrano. It will come with two engine options — one petrol and one diesel — and the diesel will further come in two states of tune, similar to the Duster. There will also be an all wheel drive version of the Terrano.
Nissan will also debut its crossover the Qashqai sometime in 2014. But, it’s not the current model that will come to India but the next-generation version which will be built on Renault-Nissan’s new modular platform, the CMF. Nissan hasn’t yet confirmed whether the crossover will come in via the CBU route or will be assembled here, but it would make more sense to take the latter route. It will help keep the pricing reasonable and with it, attract higher number of buyers. The Qashqai in India will seat seven.
Other new models will include the next generation X-Trail, again based on the CMF platform as well as the all new 370Z sports car. We don’t expect either of these models to contribute handsomely towards Nissan’s 10 per cent marketshare, especially the 370Z which operates in a very small niche.
In 2015, Nissan will launch the all-new Micra. It will be based on the CMF-A modular platform. The CMF-A has been designed specifically for emerging markets and with India as its biggest production hub. The next-generation Sunny will also be based on this platform and will debut after the Micra.
The last product which hit showrooms in 2016-17 will be an MPV. It could replace the Evalia or could carry an all new nameplate. But, like the Micra and the Sunny, it too will be built on the CMF-A.

2013 Jeep Wrangler Flattop

 concept first drive
drove four Jeep concepts over 30 trails in a week at the 2013 Easter Safari in the Moab desert, Utah, USA. Here is what the Flattop concept drives like.

The Flattop concept is visually arresting and is perhaps the simplest of the four Jeep concept cars I drove at the Jeep event.  It uses 37″ Mickey Thompson off-road tyres on the same rims as the Wrangler Rubicon to create a dramatic sense of proportion when matched to the roof line. The roof line is lowered, including lopping off two inches each from the front and rear windshields.
That sense of a low slung body on giant wheels is further bolstered by the removal of the B-pillar from the bodywork

Structurally, the detail Jeep is quite proud of is the spare wheel carrier that is a part of the structure of the car which makes it remarkably easy to operate despite the gigantic tyre mounted on it.

The idea is a vehicle with hardcore off-roading equipment but with a distinctly premium appearance both inside and outside.
In keeping with the butch custom theme, the interior layout is done in a fetching upmarket brown and black colour scheme. The premium theme is further echoed on the exterior with the LED head and tail lamps, cleaner-looking bumpers and so forth. Again, the Flattop has a slew of aftermarket bits but the engine is stock, the 3.6-litre V6, mated this time to a 6-speed manual. This was the sole manual I drove. I noticed that while this gearbox was very positive, the throws were long and the way the gear lever comes back towards you looks delightfully old school.
However, the drive feel isn’t dissimilar to the stock Wrangler and I wondered why this concept was created. Jeep says a majority of its owners tend to modify and personalise their cars and concepts like the Flattop are extremely useful in being able to give them ideas about what directions the customs could take.

Obviously, the chance of a concept or some part of it making it into production is a genuine consideration as well. For example, this Jeep has contrast-coloured inserts in the seven slot grille, while most production Jeeps have simpler painted metal finishes.

2013 Hyundai Grand i10 (BA) first drive

These are the first pictures of Hyundai ‘s new small car for India and we have driven it. Called the Grand i10 (referred to as the BA until now), the car will be positioned between the i10 and i20 hatchbacks and will come with both petrol and diesel engines. There will be an automatic version too, mated to the petrol engine.
The Grand i10 is nearly the size of the i20, which makes it extremely promising as far as passenger and luggage space go

Design and interior

The Grand i10 isn’t an updated or tweaked version of an existing Hyundai model in India, but is an all-new car from the ground up where the Indian market is concerned. As the pictures reveal, it continues to follow Hyundai ‘s fluidic design language but has stronger design lines and an edgier character compared to both the i10 and i20. The Grand is larger than the i10 and it sits on a longer wheelbase as well, so expect a roomier cabin and a bigger boot which should be among the best in class.
Hyundai has improved the look and feel of plastic inside the cabin giving the Grand i10 a plusher, more upmarket ambience. There’s a good level of equipment too. The Grand i10 gets height adjustable driver’s seat, electric ORVMs, a stereo with Bluetooth telephony, a multifunctional steering wheel, reversing camera, and for the first time in this segment – rear aircon vents. In addition, the Grand will also sport ABS and airbags on the safety end.
The front and rear of the Grand i10 do have fluidic elements, but when you're making an economic car, getting swoopy with the body panels becomes cost-inefficient

Drivetrain options

The Grand i10 will be available with two engine options. The petrol will be the tried and tested 1.2-litre Kappa 2 engine which currently powers the i20. The Kappa 2 boasts of class-leading output figures and is one of the better engines in its class when it comes to refinement, performance or fuel economy. Expect it to perform as well if not better on the Grand i10 as well.
The petrol version of the Grand will be available with both a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed auto. The manual will come in four versions – Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O), while the automatic will only be sold in the Sportz trim. The latter will compete against the recently launched Nissan Micra CVT and the Honda Brio AT, but we expect it to be priced significantly lower.
The second engine will be a diesel. This will also pit the Grand i10 head-on against Maruti’s offerings – the Swift and Ritz. The three-cylinder U2 common rail direct injection diesel engine is new for India but has been on sale internationally for a while now. The engine makes 75PS of max power and 152Nm of peak torque. It uses a variable geometry turbocharger which will a first in class in India and is mated to a five-speed gearbox. There will be no automatic version for the diesel-engined Grand i10, however.

Driving impression

Our editor, Bertrand D’souza drove the much-awaited diesel version of the Grand i10 in the real world in India. Here are his driving impressions –
“The Hyundai Grand i10 aims at delivering a better driving experience than what we have come to expect from other Hyundai models sold in India. That means the soft, often squidgy driving feel has been replaced with a more confident and assuring character. One area we criticised severely was the over-sensitivity and lack of steering feel experienced in the Eon, i20 and the Verna. The Grand i10 however, is quite surprisingly much better in that area. The steering is light but not too much so, and its quite precise even though there isn’t much feedback. It will nevertheless, be appreciated by those looking to drive it in urban areas but is also comfortable and confident at higher speeds on highways.
Another stand-out aspect is its handling. The suspension is soft and you do feel the body roll, but its not intimidating. The Grand i10 suspension response to tight hard corners is well-measured. There wasn’t much we could assess in terms of ride quality, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that it handles potholes and bumps comfortably. Now, I don’t expect Elantra levels of plushness, but for a small hatchback it should be reasonably cushy.
The most important aspect however, is its diesel engine. It’s the first time Hyundai have offered a diesel this low in the pecking order. Despite this, it does not feel low-cost; this second-generation CRDi is smooth, refined and best of all there is very little engine noise heard inside the cabin. Hyundai haven’t released any official specifications for the diesel engine, but I can tell you that power delivery is beautifully linear. You barely sense any turbo lag and the engine picks up cleanly from as low as 1200rpm even in higher gears.
This diesel has a strong low- and mid-range torque delivery but diminishes quickly at the top end. I expect the Grand i10 to show some quick acceleration numbers but not a very high top speed. This is also because of the way its geared, tuned as it is for better fuel efficiency rather than performance. Hyundai claims that fuel efficiency will be best-in-class but haven’t revealed ARAI figures yet, which will be announced — along with the specs — at the official unveil event in September. The gearing feels tall; in third gear for instance, it goes over an indicated 110kmph on the speedometer. In-gear acceleration is strong and overtaking should not be an issue with the diesel.
The Grand i10 is quite impressive, but wait for a full test for us to reveal more on what we believe is a very strong award contender.”

Finally, the pricing

As far as pricing goes, expect significant pricing overlap with both the i10 and i20. Expect the base petrol to start around the Rs 4.5 lakh mark, with the diesel Grand i10 priced at Rs 5.5 lakh.
