Microsoft to acquire Nokia's handset business for $7.2bn

Microsoft on Tuesday said it would buy Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.44 billion euros, and the Finnish firm said its CEO, Stephen Elop, would join Microsoft when the transaction closed.

Finland's Nokia, once the undisputed leader in mobile phones, has been struggling to respond to the challenge from smartphone makers such as Apple and Samsung.

Analysts say Elop's bold bet in 2011 to adopt Microsoft's untested Windows Phone software has yet to pay off.

The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014 and is subject to approval by Nokia's shareholders and regulatory approvals. Nokia partnered in 2011 with Microsoft and uses Microsoft's Windows software to run its mobile phones.

"It's a bold step into the future - a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies," Microsoft's outgoing CEO, Steve Ballmer, said in a statement.

"Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft's share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services."

Nokia said in a statement it expected that Elop, along with senior executives Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber, would transfer to Microsoft when the deal was concluded. It did not say what roles they would take at Microsoft.

Nokia board chairman Risto Siilasmaa would take over CEO duties while the Finnish firm looked for a new CEO, it said.

Elop, a Canadian hired by Nokia in 2010 from Microsoft, has been one of the favourites to take over as Microsoft chief when Ballmer steps down.

Google+ update brings in Auto Awesome notification

A small update was pushed today for Google+ on Android and other platforms that adds a bit more fun to using Google’s social networking service. Users will now be notified whenever Google+ creates a picture through its Auto Awesome feature.
google-plus-logo
Not everyone who uses Google+ might be aware of this amusing new feature that was added to the service just a few months ago. Auto Awesome is a tool that automatically creates a new composition on pictures in your collection. This can range from a simple photobooth-style mix of photos with the same background, a short animation made from a series of 5 or more photos taken in rapid succession, to a merge of High Dynamic Range (HDR) images.
While the feature has already been in Google+ on Android, iOS, and desktop versions for quite a while now, it works silently in the background and the only way you’ll be aware of such photos produced by Auto Awesome is by searching for photos using the word “#autoawesome” or by noticing an icon overlaid on the photo. Users will have to wonder no more as they will now be notified whenever that happens so that you can immediately show it to friends or share it with your circles.
Version 4.1.1 of the Google+ app for Android, which also contains other bug fixes and performance improvements, has already been pushed to Google Play Store. But as always, it may take some time before it reaches everyone.

New Fujifilm Instant Camera Looks Straight Out of the ’70s

Fujifilm is still producing new models of instant film cameras, and its newest flagship looks like a blast from the past.
Fujifilm Japan’s recently-announced Instax Mini 90 is an instant film camera that wears the same retro styling seen in some of the company’s other cameras like the X-M1. It uses Instax film, Fuji’s instant film that measures 2.13 x 3.4 inches — about the size of a credit card.
When you take a photo with the Instax Mini 90, you’ll get a print immediately, which is great for the hipster who desires immediate gratification. The camera sports other features attractive to the artsy-bohemian crowd too, such as bulb mode for extended exposures, a double exposure setting, and a 60mm f/12 lens that should be decent enough for macro photography.
The Instax Mini 90 currently has a release date of September 20th in Japan, but there aren’t firm dates for when it will available stateside. When it does, though, it’ll probably run around $220 — not cheap for what amounts to a camera for experimentation, especially considering the film costs around $15 for 20 exposures.
Still, it’ll all be worth it when you upload your scanned, double-exposed, aggressively out-of-focus Instax photos onto Tumblr and watch the reblogs roll in.

Apple Planning November Launch For iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C In China

Apple’s iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C handsets may not reach China until Nov. 28, according to a recent report from the Chinese-language publication First Financial Daily. As such, it would appear that Apple’s next-generation i Devices could launch in the world’s most populous nation between one and two months after the handsets’ anticipated launch in the United States.
The wait, First Financial Daily explains, is due to the fact that Apple has yet to gain approval from Chinas Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, however the sources cited also note that Qualcomm chips mean both handsets will be compatible with China Mobile’s network. China, of course, is an important market for Apple: just a few days ago, we told you how the launch of a low-cost handset in the country would be bad news for Samsung, who dominates the Chinese smartphone market with its less expensive models.
As such, and due mainly to the price of Apple’s iPhones, the Cupertino, Calif. company presently holds around five percent of the market in China.
Apple’s iPhone 5S is expected to be a midterm upgrade to its flagship iPhone handset, while the iPhone 5C is said to constitute a low-cost option that will feature plastic housing, less impressive internals, and possibly no support for Siri.
iPhone 5C.
Both handsets are expected to be announced at a special event on Sept. 10, 2013. We’ll keep you updated with further information as we receive it.

Nokia Lumia 925 vs Lumia 920, Android flagships

Nokia has launched its new Lumia 925 flagship smartphone in India, an evolution of the Lumia 920 that arrived in the country in January. It has a few advantages over its predecessor like better camera and display quality, improved fit and finish of the body and a much-needed reduction in weight (compared to the bulk of Lumia 920).

While Lumia 925 may not be as big a change as Lumia 920 was to the Lumia 900, it certainly brings a few things to the table. Here are our first impressions of the device, giving you what you need to know about the new Lumia 925…

Design

The first thing to notice in the Lumia 925 is its metal casing. Only the rim around the handset is made of aluminium, while the back is made of polycarbonate.

This phone is much lighter at 139gram, compared to the 185gram of Lumia 920. The wireless charging feature is present in Lumia 925, but it requires an additional back cover, as compared to the in-built Q1 compatible plate of Lumia 920.

Overall, the phone feels much better in the hand than Lumia 920 without compromising on the build quality at all.

Display
Lumia 925 comes with an AMOLED screen with PureMotion HD+ and ClearBlack technologies. While Lumia 920 has the same screen technologies, it has to settle for an IPS display instead of an AMOLED one. Thus, Lumia 925 has the advantage of reproducing better colours and consuming less battery, while maintaining similar, if not the same, viewing angles.

Processor and software

Lumia 925 runs on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB RAM under the hood, which it shares with its predecessor. Both the phones run on Windows Phone 8 and have the Amber update (it started rolling out for Lumia 920 in India in the third week of August 2013). Therefore, we don’t have much to explore in the Lumia 925 on the software side.

Camera
Nokia has altered the optical assembly in the camera of Lumia 925 in order to deliver more accurate colours and details in daylight images and better low-light photos as compared to 920 whose colour reproduction has been a bother.

Our short time with the phone did not give us much scope to see how well it works, but Nokia had a ‘dark room’ at the event, where we could check out its imaging capabilities in low-light areas. The phone captures a lot of detail in the dark, as is the case with Lumia 920, but determining which does a better job will take a full review and comparison.

Nokia 'Bandit' Windows Phone with 6-inch full-HD display, 20-megapixel camera in the works: Report

nokia-lumia-635.jpg.jpg
Nokia seems to be bitten by the phablet bug and is reportedly working on a 6-inch phablet.
The Verge has claimed that the Finnish handset manufacturer is currently testing a 6-inch device running an updated version of Windows Phone. The site further claims that the company has code-named the device as 'Bandit' and it is expected to include a full-HD (1080p) display and will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor.
However, the device may not be unveiled before Microsoft rolls out the GDR3 update to Windows Phone. Microsoft is expected to release the GDR3 update for Windows Phone 8 soon which will enable support for quad-core processors and full-HD displays on the Windows Phone platform.
The report also notes that the Nokia Bandit phablet will ship with a 20-megapixel rear camera and also suggests that the device may borrow the rear panel features of the Nokia Lumia 925 to accommodate the camera. It also asserts that the Lumia phablet will be sleek and light in weight and would come with a polycarbonate body.
Microsoft's GDR3 update is due for launch later this year and is expected to improve some of the features already present in Windows Phone. The Verge lists some changes that are expected with the roll out of the GDR3 update. In addition to the features listed above, Windows Phone GDR3 update is expected to bring an additional column of Live Tiles on the Start screen, rotation lock, minor UI tweaks and a new Driving Mode option, the report notes.
Previously, purported picture of Nokia Lumia phablet's front panel was leaked online. However, not much was known about the device in terms of specifications. With the first set of specifications leaking out, we can expect to hear more on the device soon.
